mini reviews of korean/japanese sunscreens
Skin type: late 20s, oily skin, large pores, living in a hot and humid environment near the equator (aka summer all year round). I also don't wear make-up often so I can't assess if they do well under make-up. I'm East Asian but slightly tan so I dislike visible white casts. I generally look for matte sunscreens because of my oily skin and humid environment, and a plus if they are super affordable ($15 and below).
I usually work indoors in front of windows, and occasionally I go out into the sun for prolonged periods for travelling/hiking, and I have never burned with any of the listed sunscreens.
My HG used to be the Etude Mild Airy Sunprise, but the reformulation made it feel very oily on my skin, hence I branched out and tried more sunscreens!
SKIN1004 Hyalu-Cica Water-Fit Sun Serum SPF50+ PA++++
I accidentally bought 2 bottles at one go when it was on sale but I'm glad I did because I really enjoyed using this sunscreen because it leaves a natural finish, a very subtle scent (to me) and no visible white cast. My skin feels slightly moisturised as well. I get oily around late afternoon with this sunscreen, which is typical for me. WRP when it's on sale!
Missha All Around Safe Block Sun Milk SPF50+PA+++
I bought this after I kept seeing the sub highly recommending it for oily skin but sadly I did not like it. It is very mattifying, and it leaves a slight white cast that does go away after a while. However, the worst part is that the sunscreen is that it accentuates all my pores and flaky/dry spots when my skin isn't looking so good. However, despite it being very mattifying at the start, I also get oily around late afternoon for this, so the mattifying properties doesn't last longer than other sunscreens I've worn. I only use this sunscreen on a good skin day, or else my face just looks horrible. There is also a strong powdery scent but it doesn't bother me that much. WNRP.
SKIN AQUA UV Super Moisture Milk SPF 50+ PA+++
(Not sure why mine is the PA+++ when most online shops sell the PA++++ ones) I bought this in a drugstore in Indonesia last year and I really like it! Leaves a natural finish, almost like I'm not wearing anything on my skin, no scent, no white cast. I get oily around late afternoon for this as well. I even worn this out, with reapplication, when I was scuba diving (3 dives a day) and I didn't burn. WRP but the PA++++ version for more sun protection.
SCINIC Enjoy Super Active Airy Sun Stick SPF50+ PA++++
Using the sunstick mainly for touch-ups throughout the day when I'm under the sun for a long time. It applies ok, some slight drag, and it doesn't feel heavy or oily sitting on my face! It is also smaller compared to other sunsticks, but that is a plus for me as it's more convenient to bring it around. WRP but I likely want to try other sunsticks.
(Non-AB) Banana Boat Ultra Protect Sunscreen Lotion SPF50 PA+++
This sunscreen is really popular in my country and maybe in SEA in general so I bought it to try. It's leaves my skin feeling very moisturised and has a dewy finish. Perhaps people with dry skin would enjoy it more! My face gets oily around early afternoon with this as compared to the usual late afternoon with other matte sunscreens. WNRP and mainly using on my body now.
Hope these mini reviews helped! I'm hoping to try the Tocobo Bio Watery Sun Cream and also Japanese sunscreens like the Kose sun milk, and the Omi bears gold packaging sunscreen as I've read good reviews about it in this sub. Do recommend other sunscreens suitable to oily skin in hot and humid weather if you have any!
