Why so few Australians visit the northern parts of their country?

I mean that most Australians are far more likely to visit Bali, Thailand, Europe or the US rather than to go for vacations to the Northern Territory. Meanwhile, for us non-Australians this is one of the most exotic parts of the country and maybe world.
