Petrol or Diesel?

I know this has been asked before but still unsure on what to get. I passed my test last week and am hoping to get a first car, I've driven in both petrol and diesel and both have pros and cons. Basically I'd be travelling about 30km to and from work for the most part, but I'd also be travelling about 3 hours up to Dublin once or twice a month. I'd assume diesel would be the better option for my situation but for just traveling to work and back would diesel still be fine? Just looking for opinions
