Spector Bass for Death Metal?
I'm a guitar player who knows very little about bass, but I’m sick of using VSTs and want to invest in a real bass for my demos. I play death metal (Nightmarer, Suffocation, Cannibal Corpse, etc.), and I know for sure that 34” scale basses don’t work for me, so I’m looking at 35” options. Also curious on Indonesia VS Korea as I come from the line of thinking if it isn't German American or Japanese it's using cheap parts.
Right now, I’m torn between: • Ibanez Iron Label BTB • Schecter Stiletto • Spector Legend (Korean-made, 5-string) → Here’s the exact one I’m looking at here. (Reddit link to text isn't working?) https://www.ebay.com/itm/205313891723?mkevt=1&mkpid=0&emsid=e11051.m43.l1123&mkcid=7&ch=osgood&euid=09dc5e8e00104b03bfa5d010005b6f59&bu=43077667574&osub=-1%7E1&crd=20250225210542&segname=11051 Thoughts on that price?
I know the Ibanez would be solid for death metal, especially with a pickup swap, but I’m curious about how Spector basses hold up in this genre. I know Dan Briggs (BTBAM) plays one, but my tone goals are more on the brutal side.
One thing I’m unsure about is the bridge. Spector’s bridge looks pretty traditional, whereas something like the Ibanez SRMS MR5 bridge seems designed for better single-string isolation. Should I be concerned about that for tone/stability? Also, would swapping pickups be necessary to get a more aggressive death metal sound out of the Spector?
Would love to hear your thoughts—especially from anyone using a Spector for extreme metal! Thanks.
