High HOA fees for condos?

Bought my first home (SFH) in 2020. Getting ready to sell for reasons I won't go into. Location is the general Washington DC-Baltimore, MD area.

Out of curiosity, I've been looking at condos. Why are monthly HOA fees so high? I've looked at maybe a dozen condo listings thus far, and it feels like the cheapest HOA fee I've seen is ~$1,000/month, but it's usually closer to ~$1,500-$1,700/month, give or take.
