Thompson and Morgan 161 bulb planting guide..
Hey all,
So I'm going to have to plant the summer bulbs from thompson and morgan this weekend that were mentioned on here a while ago.
I'm basically brand new to gardening so I've used a table in an article from Farmer Gracey and AI to put together planting guide that states the total space required for the summer bulbs is 2.83 m2.
I'm going to create a summer flower bomb in a 4m2 space between two sets of steps in my garden.
Seasoned gardeners, feel free to correct, but I thought this might help some!
Here's the calculation:
- Acidanthera (30 Bulbs):
- This is not listed, however it is most similar to Gladiolus. So we will use that number.
- 30 bulbs / 30 bulbs/m2 = 1 m2
- Anemone Mixed (15 Bulbs):
- 15 bulbs / 90 bulbs/m2 = 0.166 m2
- Crocosmia (6 Bulbs):
- 6 bulbs / 120 bulbs/m2 = 0.05 m2
- Freesia Mixed (9 Bulbs):
- 9 bulbs / 100 bulbs/m2 = 0.09 m2
- Gladioli Mixed (6 Bulbs):
- 6 bulbs / 30 bulbs/m2 = 0.2 m2
- Liatris spicata (20 Bulbs):
- This is not listed. However, many sources suggest a spacing of 15cm between plants. This would equate to roughly 44 plants per square meter. I will use 44.
- 20/44 = 0.45m2
- Oxalis 'Iron Cross' (60 Bulbs):
- This is not listed. However, many sources suggest a spacing of 5-10cm between plants. I will use 100 per square meter.
- 60/100 = 0.6 m2
- Ranunculus (15 Bulbs):
- 15 bulbs / 90 bulbs/m2 = 0.166 m2
Total Area:
- 1 + 0.166 + 0.05 + 0.09 + 0.2 + 0.45 + 0.6 + 0.166 = 2.828 m2
Therefore, your summer bulbs will require approximately 2.83 square meters of space.
