From IT to “the trades”, an essay
Hi all, this is less a question and more a complaint about the quality of responses I see when people ask about "is AI stealing my job", "will AI replace *dev/sysadmin/etc", "is it worth getting into IT because of AI".
A response I often see is some dumbass saying "go to the trades". As someone who came from blue collar trade work over to technology, whenever I see this response it always seems to be a dead giveaway that that person doing the recommending has never actually worked in the trades. I have nothing but respect for builders/machinists/mechanics/electricians/etc, but the idea that those jobs are even remotely comparable to basically any job in tech is comical. Those jobs are often 10-12 hour days of labor intensive work, every day, hourly, with trash benefits. I love trade work, and think it's great that people do it because I sure as fuck don't want to, but constantly recommending it as an alternative to working in tech is an S-tier douchebag response. I'd rather work tier 1 help desk for the rest of my life than go back to blue collar work.
