Where should I stay?

Edited to add: thanks for all the helpful responses so far! Are there any places to get an apartment for a couple of months or so (or two 1 month rentals as I might want to move around) besides Airbnb? All the ones I found on property guru etc are for yearly rentals…

Hi all, I'm a 40 year old Chinese American guy, looking to retire in the next couple of years. Originally I was planning to retire to Singapore or Bangkok, but I visited KL recently and fell in love. It's not as boring as Singapore but not as chaotic as Bangkok, I also speak Mandarin and English and love Chinese food, so KL seems a great fit on paper.

I know visiting a place for a week is very different from living there, so I want to spend 1-1.5 months end of 2025 living in KL, thankfully my company allows remote work so I can work remotely (albeit with horrible US West Coast hours). I was originally planning to stay at a hotel for a week while I scope out where to live, but then discovered this subreddit so figured I ask here ahead of time.

Looking for the following criteria:

  1. Proximity to great food, both street food/hole in the wall places and fine dining

  2. Nightlife, bars and clubs etc

  3. Large Chinese population, from what I gathered it's pretty much anywhere lol

  4. Close to a good university if possible, I guest lectured in an university here in the US, to keep myself somewhat occupied I might do the same in KL if that's a thing there

  5. Not sure if there's much of a tech startup scene in KL, but if there is one would like to be somewhat close to it

Cost is not a major concern, I don't care about public transportation either as I will use Grab everywhere. From what I read online, Demansara Heights, Cheras, TTDI and Bangsar might be good areas, Mont Kiara seems to be the expat center, I'm ok hanging out with expats but want to make local friends too, plus I heard the traffic there sucks, so it's not high on my list.

Would love suggestions from the community, thanks!
