Concern about misuse of personal information to influence politics
I wanted to share something peculiar that’s been happening lately and seek if anyone else has encountered similar experiences or is concerned about its potential implications.
Recently, I received a letter from Senator Gary Peters expressing gratitude for reaching out to his office regarding the confirmation of Peter Hegseth for the Department of Defense. However, the peculiar part is that I never mentioned Hegseth or any DoD nomination during my call. My call was entirely unrelated to this matter.
On top of this, I’ve been receiving strange political texts, emails, and mailers addressed to me using incorrect names—sometimes multiple incorrect names. These messages often reference political figures and causes that I don’t support. I have no record of signing up for any of these communications.
I’m beginning to wonder if someone is using my personal information to contact elected officials or enroll me in these newsletters. If so, what is the underlying purpose of this activity?
At first, I was throwing away/deleting these thinking it was nonsense. However, This situation could have more significance than mere annoyance. If individuals names and information are being misused, it could potentially create fake support or opposition to policies and representatives, potentially influencing how lawmakers vote. Additionally, it raises concerns about the security of our personal and voter information.
I’m curious to know:
Has anyone else in Michigan experienced something similar?
Does this raise any red flags for you about potential political manipulation or data misuse?
Could you provide any advice on how to investigate this matter or protect my information?
I’ve already contacted Common Cause to report the situation and seek their guidance. However, I would greatly appreciate it if others could share any observations or insights they may have regarding similar patterns.
