Why do people check hardware config into vcs?

noob here. I understood separating your config and hardware config was so you can check in your configuration and sync it across machines but have a separate hardware config for settings that you only want on that specific machine. but then I see people sharing their nix configuration with the hardware config checked in? am i not supposed to gitignore it?
