Which Presidents were Unknown 8-years before their First Election?
I was wondering which Presidents were unknown nationally 8 years prior to their first election?
Unsure:
Woodrow Wilson - 1904 - President of Princeton University
Warren Harding - 1912 - Had served as Lieutenant Governor of Ohio 6 years earlier
Wilson would have been known in academia but I don't know if this translated to the general population. Harding was definitely known locally but also gave the speech nominating Taft at the 1912 Republican National Convention so may have been known.
Locally Known:
Abraham Lincoln - 1852 - Private citizen, had previously served as House Rep. Delivered the eulogy at Henry Clay's funeral
Chester Arthur - 1872 - Collector of the Port of New York
Benjamin Harrison - 1880 - Private citizen, had unsuccessfully attempted to run for Governor & Senator. Also was grandson to a president
Jimmy Carter - 1968 - State senator in Georgia
Barack Obama: 2000 - State senator in Illinois
Totally Unknown:
- Ulysses Grant - 1860 - Worker at leather store
Grant had an insane, jam-packed 7 years. He went from being a random store clerk in April 1861 to being elected president in November 1868. Shortly before this, he'd been selling firewood on the street.
