Long term / Short term / Since start stats

I bought a 2021 Pro a few months ago and I've been perplexed by this display. Sometimes it shows "long term" numbers, sometimes "short term," and sometimes "Since start." I don't know that I'm doing anything to change the display, and there seems to be no rhyme or reason to when it changes. Does anyone know how this is controlled? TIA.
