Residential appraisers (especially female) do you feel safe at inspections? Who are you typically meeting with? The relator or the homeowners?

I am exploring the idea of becoming a residential appraiser but I have some safety concerns. I don’t think I would feel safe meeting with only the homeowner. I just imagine getting to the basement utility room and a door behind me suddenly locking and being held hostage in the basement lol.

Also do you get the opportunity to pass on jobs your don’t want? I live in a major city and there are some dicey areas I would not love to go in.
