Adopting a cat

Hi! I live in Ames and looking to adopt a cat this week. I’ve been planning on going to the Animal Rescue League, but one of my friends said I should look into better places? She said to look for somewhere with a no-kill policy or a place that saves animals from being euthanized, any suggestions? Not looking for a kitten
