Your feelings about martials vs casters?
EDIT: Thanks everyone for your answers, some of them are quite helpful. To fill in some more details, I didn't expect myself to be THE damage dealer, I fully expected the ranger to deliver. But honestly, I barely did anything in any of these ecounters.
Some spells I can't pick because I'm limited on 2024 manual in our campaign and for example Tasha's Mind Whip isn't there if I'm not mistaken. That being said, I could pick web indeed. But I though I will rely on some other control spells (which was a mistake).
My current spell list:
Chill Touch(Cantrip)
Fire Bolt(Cantrip)
Mage Hand(Cantrip)
Ray of Frost(Cantrip)
Chromatic Orb(1st)
Disguise Self(1st)
Shield(1st)
Flame Blade(2nd)
Hold Person(2nd)
Mirror Image(2nd)
and aberrant spells which are:
Arms of Hadar
Calm Emotions
Detect Thoughts
Dissonant Whispers
Mind Sliver
We started small campaign in 2024 recently, just two players and DM. I play aberrant sorcerer, my friend is beast master ranger. We started at level 3 and we had 4 combats so far.
I have to say ranger did far more damage then I did. In two combats, amount of damage I have done was clear 0 :D
So far my turns can ne summarized as: - I dont see opponents and cant fight them - I cast spell or cantrip and it fails/misses - I hit with cantrip but I do very low damage - My most succesful so far was hitting with flame blade - I often cant cast a lot my spells, because enemies arnt humanoids or I cant use fire
My friend has beast and two weapons, so he does 3 attacks mostly. Even if he misses 2, he still eliminates one opponent.
Otherwise Im pretty happy about how I created my character. Frankly Im happy Im not a wizard!! I didnt read all classes yet, but my understanding is this will be similar with a lot of other classes. Im bit afraid level 5 and 6 wont do much difference since my friend will also gain attack and perhaps other features.
Thoughts?
