Need Help With The Quest "Still In The Dark"

So I did the quest of "I could make you care" before and now I am trying to do the quest where the Elder makes go around talking with the scouts. The problem is, the scouts attack me on sight and don't let me speak to them, and if I kill them I get infamy with the Brotherhood and Veronica walks away.

So have I just locked myself out of the brotherhood quest line by doing Veronica's quest first? I really wanted to wear their armour but is it no longer an option for me?
