Italy Just Puppeted Itself?

Playing Ahistorical Yugoslavia, Italy decided to declare on me (expected) and during the war Italian "Regno del Sud" rebels sprang up in Venice and allied me to fight Mussolini. Somehow when the war ended, they not only remained my puppet but also brought the entire country with them.

So now I own Italy. Very unexpected.
