A hidden quest that undeniably has the best writing in the game [KCD2]
When sneaking through Suchdol you have the opportunity to pick a very hard lock and face a dying Markvart Von Aulitz, the man Henry originally set out to seek his revenge on.
However what makes this scene so genius is that after interacting with Von Aulitz, that Henry is truly shocked that Von Aulitz can remembers the face of every person he has killed, even distinctly remembering Henrys parents and we realise that he is just like Henry, he also feels profound regret for his actions. Von Aulitz tells Henry his parents would be proud of him and questions how many fathers and husbands he must have killed to get where he is.
The motif of the story finally becomes clear when we see Von Aulitz is not the true villain, and rather just a pawn that like Henry has an indomitable spirit to be useful as a pawn for another king/false prophet. The true antagonist of are the demons that plague Henry to murder and ravage the lives of everyone else to achieve his goals, therefore starting another revenge cycle like with Erik. >! (Whom, in the 3rd game will likely end up killing Henrys father to prove this point) !< When Henry rises above this vengeful urge he will finally be different from Von Aulitz and Toth and inherit Martins wish for his son.
Overall 10/10 Writing.
