Why do some people stay in toxic relationships?

There is primary classmate of mine whom I've been talking to for some years now. Last year, she was telling me how her boyfriend used to beat her, manipulate her, etc. She disposed of everything that could remind her of him. Today, I see her post their photo captioned, 'The best thing that has ever happened to me'.
