Late Japanese Maple Cuttings

I was impatient and wanted to try this fun thing, propagation with cuttings. I wanted to try cloning my in-law's tamukeyama Japanese maple and a boxwood. So I got some of these materials and went for it. I'm just curious when will I know if these have failed? Or when they just won't root at all and are branches in the medium? They were green when I first potted them and now they've turned orange/purple (like their parent plant). Some have lost some of their leaves and one has lost all of them. They are planted in a perlite/peat moss medium, stored in a large clear tub on a heat mat, get 12-14 hours of light a day, and we keep our house around 69-72° F, and I spray a misting through the holes I drilled 3+ times a day. Soil has stayed moist but not saturated. Any advice welcome, thanks!
