Is Irving trying to naturally reintegrate?
At the end of season 2 episode 3, Reghabi reintegrates Mark by matching the brainwaves of both him and his innie. Delta, theta, alpha, beta, and gamma are the same brain states that we naturally go through during a normal sleep cycle. My thoughts are that during a deep sleep when they reach the delta state, the innie and the outie become one and share the same dreams, with both the innie and the outie being able to remember the dreams once they wake up.
Reghabi did this while Mark was awake, but I think that this could very well be naturally happening to severed employees on a nightly basis without them realizing it. However, I think Irving may have figured this out by his innie having a dream about the exports elevator that he saw at work, and since both his innie and outie were in the same brain state during that dream, Irving’s outie remembers having that dream about the elevator and assumes that it was from work. In response to this he starts religiously painting it over and over again to try to hold onto the memory of it or try to remember more.
So, dreams may be a natural way of the innies and outies thoughts connecting beyond the severed chip in their brain. We can also see Irving toying around with sleep in the first season as he seems to be purposely sleep deprived by drinking coffee in the evening as he repeatedly paints the elevator over and over. I think that this is his outies efforts at trying to get in touch with his innie, which does seem to work as Irving’s innie is often dozing off to sleep at work. I think Irving’s idea is that if he can get his innie to fall asleep at work, then there will be the possibility of him having work dreams for his outie to remember.
Dreams are the messenger!
