Getting a good sear

I’ve been getting more and more into cooking my steaks. Previously I’ve been doing the reverse sear method, but have been experimenting with searing first so I could really sear it but have been struggling to get a good sear on my gas grill. I’ve tried cast iron pan on the grill but still struggle. I know my grill isn’t getting hot enough because if i leave the steak on long it can develop some good sear (this is what lead me to searing first) but now I’ve gone down a rabbit hole of charcoal. Are you guys using charcoal grills, stainless pans instead of cast iron? I need to get a new grill but now I’m wondering if I should try my hand at charcoal?
