Key fob eats batteries

Why? Help. I keep them in my car because I’ll get warnings within a week with a brand new battery and the car will not start with the emergency “place fob here and start.”

Some people have suggested it’s a proximity thing? My car is in the garage and my keys are in the house a few yards away but it’s a straight shot and the car will respond if a button is pushed in the house. Using Sony CR2025 batteries. Fob belongs to a 2015 Golf TDI.
