Serious question: why do people like it here?

We're a military family that (coincidentally) has only lived in the most expensive parts of the country. We moved to DC 2 years ago, and I have to say, of all the pricey parts of this country this seems the least worth it. Of course if you're here for work purposes, what choice do you have but for others, what do you find redeemable about this area?
